I only noticed the gated road north of Hartington the other day while trying to find some cycling routes that make use of the Peak District’s best-known family-friendly ride, the Tissington trail, which follows the bed of an old railway from Ashbourne to Hurdlow. This is a circular loop of about 14 miles taking in the northernmost stretch of the trail. It’s thoroughly scenic, following the babbling upper reaches of the River Dove, passing craggy limestone and even a very impressive hillside spring. There’s also one hill that’s quite challenging with a trailer. Perfect!
