Cromford canal pushchair walk

This pushchair-friendly walk also makes a great run if you have a running stroller (I use my Phil and Ted’s Navigator; though I’m not sure it’s recommended, it does just fine) or ride, too. The canal towpath is flat, but just for kicks this route takes in most of the Cromford Incline – a steep old drag up the old railway line that is now the High Peak Trail. It’s all quite a good surface – the only bumpy bit is a short section of Intake Lane as you head back downhill into Cromford from the High Peak Trail. In April, keep an eye out for wild daffodils in the meadow between the towpath and the Derwent River. Don’t miss the opportunity for lunch or cake at the Family Tree after!

  • AREA: Whatstandwell, on the A6 between Belper and Matlock
  • DISTANCE: about 6 miles
  • FACILITIES: Toilets and cafe at Cromford; the Family Tree cafe at Whatstandwell
  • PARKING: Free parking at the canal – about 100m off the A6 along the B5035 to Crich
  • GRADIENT: Mostly flat but with one big hill
  • TERRAIN: Mostly well graded path, suitable for all-terrain pushchairs
  • OS MAP: White Peak

  1. From the parking, follow the canal north-west to High Peak Junction.
  2. At High Peak Junction, turn up the High Peak Trail. Follow it uphill for about half a mile, then keep an eye out for a path on the left that takes you onto Intake Lane, and turn right crossing under the trail.
  3. Follow the old lane towards Cromford, continuing straight ahead onto the quiet residential street. Follow it steeply downhill to the A6.
  4. Cross the A6 at the lights, and walk down beside the mill building to the canal cafe.
  5. Pick up the towpath again and follow it back to Whatstandwell.
